What is Plastic-Free Living? As the name suggests it is living without plastic. Now, I know it is nearly impossible to live without some plastic. The keyboard I’m typing on is plastic, TVs are plastic, and there are a lot of plastic components in cars. What I’m talking about is single-use plastics, multi-use disposable plastics, and other plastic items meant to be thrown away.
My goal is to go up the pyramid by first refusing, then getting rid of single-use plastics, and replacing with reusable non-plastic alternatives. Examples of single-use plastics are plastic water bottles, individually wrapped snack items, and plastic bags. Next, work on multi-use cheap plastics like shampoo bottles or ketchup bottles. Finally, figure out replacements for durable plastic items, like food storage containers.
I do make exceptions for products made from recycled plastic materials. My Rothy’s shoes, for example, are 3D-knitted from recycled plastic bottles. While recycling is not the solution to plastic pollution, supporting a market for recycled materials is important so that new resources aren’t continually depleted.
The overall goal is to reduce the amount of plastic going into landfills and our ocean. Are you ready to try plastic-free living?
