Instagram can offer lots of great tips for plastic-free living. And since you’re already on there, might as well follow a few accounts that can help you cut your plastic footprint, right?

1. @goingzerowaste
By far, Going Zero Waste is one of the best Instagram accounts for plastic-free living. Kathryn continually creates inspiring and creative content with a positive tone. She has a good mix of stats and tips, so you always walk away learning something!
She’s also just a kind human being. I met her in 2019 when we spoke on a panel about microplastics and, not going to lie, I fan-girled a little.
2. @plasticpollutes
The Plastic Pollution Coalition is a global alliance of over 1,000 organization dedicated to ridding our Earth of plastic pollution. They work with lawmakers to help write laws that help reduce the amount of single-use plastics being created in the first place and help educate the public on the toxic impact plastics have on humans, animals, and our environment.
3. @oliviafortheocean
Of course, I’m going to plug my own Instagram account. 🙂 I use my Instagram to share bits and pieces of my plastic-free lifestyle and to show people it’s easy to eliminate a good chunk of single-use plastics. Inspired by Kathryn’s #GoodNewsFriday posts, I post good news specifically related to plastics. With all the pictures of trashed beaches and animals being suffocated by plastics, I figured we needed some good news to feel like we’re not in a hopeless situation. I want people to feel motivated when they see my Instagram posts…not bummed out and defeated.

I love the “ish” concept. Plastic-Free and Zero Waste sound so absolute…it leaves no wiggle room. And as I mentioned in my January Trash Audit, everyone needs a little wiggle room. So, Simple(ish) Living makes plastic-free living much more relatable and thus more attainable.
5. @rocket_science
These budget vs. investment posts are what Anita is known for. I like that you get the point of her posts just by looking at the picture and then she goes deeper in the caption. I also love that she’s a rocket scientist! As a woman in STEM, I love seeing other women in STEM being badass!
6. @robjgreenfield
I read Rob’s book “Dude Making a Difference” which describes his quest to bike across the country while having no impact on the planet. This meant he used no electricity unless it was generated by his solar panels, he didn’t even use running water since in some places it requires energy to pump it to the tap. He only ate local organic food that was package-free or he ate foods that were thrown away–so lots of dumpster diving. I was inspired by his quest to live so minimally and I became an even bigger fan when I found out he had spent time with the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation (where I started). Throughout his journey he did a lot of fundraising for 1% for the planet and had donated part of the proceeds of to the San Diego Chapter.
7. @venomblackbird
Speaking of the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, Alex is their Chairwoman and her stories give a great glimpse into the world of policy making. She’s constantly speaking at city council meetings and working with city leaders to help eliminate plastic pollution in San Diego.
8. @reducewastenow
You’ve probably seen posts from Reduce Waste Now. These “Old Me, New Me” posts are very popular and helpful! They’re not only focused on plastic waste but all types of waste–especially food waste.
9. @plasticfreemermaid
And my love for San Diego Surfrider continues. Many people know Kate aka the “Plastic-Free Mermaid” in Australia but a lot of people don’t know that before her plastic-free mermaid days, she spent some time living in San Diego working on our Rise Above Plastics program where I met her. I love that she covers a wide range of topics, including some that might be taboo like plastic-free sex toys.
10. @sustainablysage
Finally, I love Georgette because she makes sustainability look beautiful!
