Accidental Activist
I am an accidental activist. A lot of people don’t know this about me but I started volunteering with the Surfrider Foundation to find a husband.
Yes, really.
See, I finished grad school and my career was on track, so I figured I would apply some of my drive towards finding a husband. I grew up in San Diego where you can’t get on the freeway without seeing a Surfrider bumper sticker.
So, when I thought about what I wanted in a husband, I knew I wanted to spend my life with someone who surfed and cared about the environment. Long story short, I didn’t meet my husband that way but instead I found a calling. More than ever, I know now that I was born to protect the ocean and I discovered this through my journey volunteering with Surfrider.
This organization started by three surfers in Malibu to protect their local surf spot has been the ultimate teacher in my life. And I find it fitting that I was born weeks before The Surfrider Foundation whose 35th birthday is today! So, happy birthday and thank you, Surfrider. It’s amazing to see how much it’s grown in my ten years and I’m stoked to see all that we will accomplish in the future!
By the way, my first date with my now husband was me trying to teach him how to surf (really how not to drown) and he does care about the environment!
Back to the point…so, why start a blog? Through Surfrider I found a cause. And in sharing my plastic-free journey, I’m oftentimes asked the same questions over and over again.
Like “Livi, what is the best shampoo bar and how do I use it?” (My friends call me “Livi”). Or, “what do you do about tortillas?”
I found myself having the same conversations with many different people, so I thought I’d put it all in one place. I hope you find some great tips for getting rid of single-use plastics in your life and maybe learn a few things about our amazing ocean along the way.
If you have any disposable plastic items you’re looking for an alternative for or have nagging questions about the ocean, post them in the comments and stay tuned for a future post!
