4 Ways to Avoid Disposable Plastics During the Holidays
We’re knee deep in the holiday season and especially with COVID, it’s increasingly difficult to avoid disposable plastics. From stocking stuffers to decorations, packaging and food, it’s a whole lot of plastic. Here are 5 ways to avoid disposable plastics during the holidays.
Choose Natural Decorations
I love decorating our house during the holidays. The decorations increase the cheer in our home and make it feel festive. When choosing decorations, go for natural options. Pine, fir, and other wreaths or branches are both beautiful and fragrant.
For fresh Christmas trees, consider renting a live Christmas tree. Yes, a cut Christmas tree can be composted or buried in sand dunes to stop coastal erosion, but if a live one works for you, why cut down another tree?
For all other decorations, if they’re made of plastic, make sure it’s durable. The last thing you want is to buy something that lasts only one holiday season.
Shop In Person
The best way to avoid the roulette of plastic bubble wrap from packages is to purchase items in the store! Better yet, if you can find it at small local business, even better! COVID has been tough on all the mom and pop shops, so make them your first stop when doing holiday shopping.
Plastic-Free Gifts & Wrapping
Choosing plastic-free gifts and wrapping is an obvious one! Before choosing gifts and wrapping, think about it’s end life. Can the item be reused, repaired, recycled, or composted? If it ends up in the trash, consider another option.
